Tuesday: Champions League
I spread my bets around as the excitement of pay day and Champions League football was too much for me to contain. Mistake number one before a bet has even been placed...don't get too excited. When betting one must be stoic, rational, calculated and possess nerves of steel. Maybe football betting is just a stepping stone career for contract killing. Given some of the performances of the teams I backed. Who needs a contract, just give me a gun and the address of the next player who opts to shoot into row z from 35 yards instead of opting for an elegant through ball when I've backed his team to score.
Steaua Bucharest v Chelsea: Torres to score @ 2.06
FC Basel v Schalke: Streller and/or Salah to score @ 3.0 and 5.0
Arsenal v Napoli: Both to score @ 1.92
Both to score accumulator:
Arsenal v Napoli
Ajax v AC Milan
Basel v Schalke
Porto v Athletico
Needless to say, not a single one of these came in. After watching an inspired Torres get sent off against Tottenham, something told me he would be equally up for this game, he tends to turn up for lesser teams in cup competitions. This bet was effectively dead in the water. Oh Fernando, my man improved on being sent off in a second half to being taken off after 11 minutes. Is there a market for a player to not complete the full 90? Betfair should get on to this. My bet was effectively dead in the water before I even had a chance to make myself a cup of tea. The score line ended 4-0 I am quite sure Torres would have scored had he stayed on. Unlucky.
FC Basel are a team I really like. Streller and Salah are a handful for any defence in Europe, Tottenham and Chelsea fans I am sure will agree. Schalke had conceded 8 goals in the 4 games prior to this and generally have a poor defence. I was expecting both to score here and included it in my accumulator, I didn't watch the game but every time I flicked over, Basel looked on the verge of scoring. How they didn't I will never know. Given that if either one of these score, I wouldn't have minded losing the rest of the bets. Bad or unlucky? I really cant call it, but the odds for any of them to score were great value. Basel not scoring at home against a shaky Schalke defence? Alarmingly unlucky, I have a bad habit of picking these games out.
I put the majority of my eggs on Arsenal v Napoli both to score. But of course, Napoli had no regard for my eggs. And I shall turn up at the next champions league press conference with some eggs for Rafa Benitez's face. Rafa Benitez is supposed to be a cup football master tactician. I have seen him mastermind many an away performance. I should have known better from the build up when he referred to Arsene Wenger as, "the best manager in the Premier League." Is that what a manager is supposed to tell a rival manager before facing him? Benitez certainly didn't graduate from Sir Alex's school of mind games. I am pretty sure somewhere in the textbook of mind games you only compliment a manager if they pose no threat to you whatsoever. I cashed out with just under a third of my stake remaining. Bad betting.
The accumulator was a bit of fun and 2 out of 4 came in. Unbelievably AC Milan and Ajax came in when on 87 minutes it was still 0-0. I shall go away and do some deep meditation to try and relocate my betting mojo.
